Project Background

Somos U, part of a major business group, operates 260 articulated and bi-articulated buses within Bogotá’s Bus Rapid Transit system, TransMilenio—the backbone of urban mobility in the city. TransMilenio serves as the central axis of mobility in Bogotá and represents the city’s primary mass transportation system.

Serving major corridors across the city, Somos U is committed to delivering safe, efficient, and technology-driven transport services. With a vision to modernize operations, the company has actively pursued digital transformation through intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

Project Pain Points

As operations scaled, Somos U faced increasing pressure to digitize operations, improve safety, and enhance operational transparency. Manual workflows based on Excel limited efficiency, traceability, and real-time decision-making. At the same time, the operator needed stronger capabilities in improved safety monitoring and behavioral management, data integration for dispatching and maintenance, and system reliability.

On the platform side, Somos U evaluated multiple solutions, including dispatching and scheduling systems, while also facing direct competition from OEM platforms. The selection process was highly competitive and required not only technical capability but also strong customization and service responsiveness.

A critical pain point came from system instability, which led to firmware changes due to multiple failures experienced with a system integrator. This created an urgent need for a reliable partner capable of rapid response and tailored development.

Project Solution

Streamax delivered a comprehensive Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) solution that integrates on-board intelligence, AI-powered safety technologies, a cloud-based SaaS platform, and deep customization services to support Somos U’s transition toward a fully digitalized and intelligent fleet management model.

On-board System

The vehicle-side solution enables full-scenario real-time video monitoring and operational visibility across the fleet through a multi-camera intelligent monitoring system deployed on each bus.

In addition to video surveillance, the system incorporates AI-powered Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities to proactively identify unsafe driving behaviors, including fatigue driving, distracted driving, mobile phone usage, tailgating, lane departure, and potential forward-collision risks. Once detected, alerts and event records are automatically generated and uploaded to the platform in real time, enabling proactive safety management and significantly improving operational safety performance.

By integrating safety management, video surveillance, and AI-driven risk detection into a unified ecosystem, the solution strengthens real-time situational awareness across the fleet, enabling operators to identify and respond to safety risks more proactively.

SaaS Intelligent Operations Platform

To support centralized fleet operations, Streamax deployed a cloud-based SaaS platform that provides unified management across vehicles, drivers, operations, maintenance, and dispatching processes. The platform supports intelligent scheduling, automatic dispatching, real-time vehicle monitoring, driver management, historical reporting, and operational analytics.

Through integration with vehicle CAN bus systems, the platform can also collect and analyze real-time operational data such as vehicle speed, kilometers, braking status, RPM, door status, etc. This enables operators to gain deeper visibility into fleet performance and make faster, information-based operational decisions.

By consolidating telematics, operational workflows, and fleet-wide analytics into a centralized platform, Streamax enhances end-to-end operational efficiency, improves data visibility, and supports the development of a more scalable and data-driven fleet management architecture.

Customization & Workflow Digitalization

Beyond standard ITS products, Streamax also provided extensive customization and workflow digitalization services tailored to the customer’s operational requirements. These services included customized firmware development, third-party system integration, API integration, workflow digitalization, and the development of tailor-made functional modules.

As part of the digital transformation initiative, traditional workflows that previously relied on Excel spreadsheets and manual coordination were replaced with fully digitalized processes. This significantly reduced manual workload and error while improving operational efficiency, process consistency, and management standardization.

Intelligent Scheduling & Dynamic Dispatching

One of the key highlights of the project is the platform’s intelligent dynamic scheduling capability. By continuously integrating real-time information related to vehicle availability, driver schedules, maintenance planning, vehicle operating conditions, and task requirements, the system can automatically generate scheduling and dispatching plans.

When operational changes occur, such as driver replacement, vehicle breakdowns, temporary service suspension, or task adjustments, the platform can instantly generate events, automatically update schedules, and synchronize notifications to both drivers and management teams in real time. This significantly improves operational responsiveness, dispatching efficiency, and coordination consistency across the fleet.

The deployment of Streamax’s ITS and SaaS solution delivered measurable improvements across operational efficiency, safety management, and data performance, supporting Somos U’s transition toward a fully digitalized and intelligent fleet operation model.

Operational Efficiency

By digitizing scheduling and dispatching workflows, Somos U successfully replaced manual, Excel-based processes with a centralized and fully traceable operational system. This transformation enabled real-time synchronization of vehicle availability, dynamic scheduling adjustments when vehicles or drivers are replaced, and significantly improved dispatch accuracy and operational coordination across the fleet.

In addition, the system integrates passenger flow verification into daily operations, enabling Somos U to perform cross-analysis of passenger flow data at the route level. This capability enhances transparency, strengthens route performance evaluation, and improves overall resource allocation efficiency.

Collectively, these capabilities have shifted fleet operations from a manual, experience-driven model toward a more data-driven and intelligently coordinated operational framework.

Safety Improvement

With the deployment of onboard video surveillance and AI-powered driver monitoring capabilities, Somos U significantly strengthened its driver behavior management and overall operational safety.

The system enables real-time detection and recording of unsafe behaviors such as smoking inside vehicles, mobile phone usage while driving, distracted driving, fatigue-related risks, and other non-compliant operational behaviors. These insights allow management teams to move from reactive incident handling to proactive intervention and continuous coaching, resulting in improved driving discipline and safer daily operations.
